Ruins of the Vijayanagara Capital

This crate starts with a slim Kannada guidebook to Hampi, made for the Karnataka archaeology department by T. S. Satyan, a photojournalist who spent his life looking hard at India. From there it wanders outward into the boulder-strewn capital of Krishnadevaraya: the devotional songs born under its patronage, the Portuguese eyewitness who walked its bazaars, and the cameras that keep coming back. Along the way you will meet a teenage postcard seller and a 1970s women's weekly carrying Satyan's own pictures. Pack water; the ruins go on for miles.

Satyan's Hampi Guide

Texts

A Kannada-language guide to Hampi, the famed capital of the Vijayanagara empire, published by Karnataka's Department of Archaeology and Museums and written by the photographer T. S. Satyan. It is a government handbook with a photographer's eye, which makes it the perfect gate into a city best understood by looking.

Purandara Dasa Devaranamas

Audio, 4 items

Purandara Dasa sang his Kannada devotional songs on the streets of Vijayanagara, and here they are again: M. L. Vasanthakumari's 1985 krithis, a lone Bhagyada Lakshmi, Vidyabhushana's keertanes, and a patient set of teaching recordings with lyrics attached. Put one on while you read the guidebook and the ruins get their soundtrack back.

A Hampi Guide's Day

Video

In 2009 the Global Lives Project filmed a full day in the life of Muttu Kumar, an 18-year-old postcard seller and tour guide, and in this clip he explains the Achyutaraya temple to a visitor among the stones. It is Hampi on film the way locals live it, a living guidebook walking the same ground Satyan wrote about.

Sewell's Forgotten Empire

Texts

Robert Sewell's 1900 history, scanned from Harvard's copy, carries the first English translations of Domingo Paes and Fernão Nunes, the Portuguese visitors who saw the city at its height. Nearly every Hampi guide since, Satyan's included, stands on their shoulders.

Snapshots from the Ruins

Images, 3 items

No colonial glass plates turned up, so this is a humbler album: rock carvings in close-up, a woman at the Hampi Bazaar scanned from a textbook, and a traveler's moon rising over the boulders. Satyan would have approved of the last one, which is all patience and light.

Satyan in Eve's Weekly

Texts

Deep inside this December 1978 issue of Eve's Weekly, a feature on child welfare carries photo credits reading "Unicef / T. S. Satyan," the very man behind our seed. It is the other side of his career, the magazine photojournalist, tucked between ads and holiday pages.
