Hard Hats and Hard Luck

It starts with a Centron safety film where bulldozers tip, scrapers roll, and a singer doing his best Johnny Cash delivers the moral in a low baritone. From there we follow the heavy iron outward: to the real Man in Black on shellac, to big machines starring in industry films, to an Army earthmover manual, and to photos of the crews who actually did the work. The archive did not hand us everything we asked for, so a couple of cards wander, and we say so when they do. Put your hard hat on and keep clear of the blade.

1

Shake Hands With Danger

Video

A 1970s Centron training film that stages spectacular earthmoving accidents while a Johnny Cash soundalike sings the safety lesson. It is grim, funny, and sincere all at once, and every other card in this crate digs out from its tire tracks.

The Real Man in Black

Audio, 4 items

Four Sun-era 78s from 1956 and 1957 by Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two, that boom-chicka rhythm the film's singer was so clearly chasing. Spin Get Rhythm right after the movie and you can hear exactly whose voice got borrowed.

Big Iron as Hero

Video, 3 items

No Caterpillar commercials surfaced, so here is the next best thing: a 1943 drama where bulldozers carve the Alaska Highway, plus two sponsored films that cast oil and power as the engines of progress. Same machines, same era of optimism, only this time nobody gets crushed.

The Army Earthmover Manual

Texts

A 1944 War Department technical manual for the LeTourneau Tournapull scraper, complete with operating instructions and a section of safety precautions. It is the dry, numbered rulebook that the film turns into flips and crashes.

Road Crew Snapshots

Images, 4 items

Real crews from Tukwila in 1935, Tulare and Fresno counties in California, and a 1950s road job, posing with trucks and graders or spreading gravel. These are the people the film was made to scare straight, looking proud of their machines.

Be Careful Out There

Audio, 3 items

The archive had no vintage safety spots to give, so this is an honest tangent: an old-time Fire Fighters drama, a talkback hour on spinal injury prevention, and a radio play about a crooked accident protection racket. Different stations, same sermon about what happens when nobody is careful.
